Our dads brother, an update

So as your all aware, our dads brother is in hospital and has been there almost 3 weeks now. It will be 3 weeks on Monday.
Well, first, the good news. He’s awake, he’s off the ventolator, he’s kind of talking, but mostly its mumbling, you cant really understand what he is saying a lot of the time.
He is being tube fed, and he currently has chest problems, an infection-pneumonia which they are trying to get rid of with antibiotics. They are also suctioning him through a tube in his nose.
Yesterday morning he became really agitated and pulled out all the tubes and wires that he’s attached to, so they put these gloves on him that are like boxing gloves, to stop him from doing that again.
The bad news is that he’s mostly unresponsive and he’s not progressing as much with his rehab as they thought he would. For instance his swallow is not great, he’s having speech therapy and physiotherapy too but he’s just not responding as much as he should be.
So…it is most likely that in the long term he will be going into a nursing home. He wont be able to live independently any more. I think its really sad that he’ll have to spend the rest of his life in long term care. Nothing has been arranged yet and probably it wont be for a few weeks. A meeting will have to be arranged with the doctors and a social worker first to arrange things and discuss the plans for where he’ll go.
His whole left hand side is dead and even though he’s getting physiotherapy on it, its unlikely that it will ever work again. He only has a tiny bit of movement in his fingers of his left hand and in his toes of his left leg.
Its a terrible situation for our family. Our dad is very depressed as you can imagine. He didnt want his brother to end up like this. None of us did.

Saw our GP

So yesterday we saw our GP. It was for a diabetic review. We also had to see the nurse, actually, the nurse is the one who did almost the entire review, the GP only came in for like five minutes at the end.
Two weeks ago we had bloods taken, we had a full CBC done. All of our bloods came back fine. Our cholesterol is a little off, but our GP said he didnt want to put us on meds for cholesterol, because he said we’re too young, he said he generally doesnt put anyone under 40 on meds for cholesterol. The rest of our bloods were good, and our A1C for the last 3 months was great. We’re almost back to being prediabetic again. He said to continue taking the glucophage for now and we’d look at it again in six months time.
As you all know our weight is an issue, we’re struggling with that, we always seem to be struggling with it. The nurse was really sympathetic towards us, as she said she’s struggling with her weight too and needs to lose about 50 pounds.
All in all it was a good appointment. I am happy that I am so healthy. Long may it continue.

Updating as I hadnt written in a while…

I havent written anything here in a while so I thought its time I tried.

So far this weeks been pretty good. I had a doctors appointment yesterday which went really well. My diabetes was reviewed and it turns out its pretty well controlled…my blood sugars over the last 3 months have been great. I also got an ECG and that was fine, my feet were fine too. I’m still struggling with my weight and trying to lose it. I see my nutritionist tomorrow for my weekly weigh in and appointment.

Nitro is having his teeth cleaned on Tuesday. Nitro is my guide dog. I have to have him at the vet for 9 AM. He’s going under general anastethic to have them cleaned. I’m not looking forward to that. Am pretty nervous actually about it.

No plans really for the upcoming weekend. Will hopefully just have a chilled out one. Do need to do my grocery shopping on Saturday and my moms going to help me do that.

Mothers day is in march and me and my lil sister are taking mom out for a meal and both putting money together to buy her some flowers. We were going to just get one card between us but then we both decided to get her a card each. She knows about the meal but she doesnt know anything about the flowers and we were thinking we may each give her a little gift too.

Well thats it from here. Will write again soon.

Further to my last post about our dads brother…

I thought I’d give you all an update on how our uncle, our dads brother is doing. Its a week today since he was found seizing and was brought to hospital. He’s still in the ICU and he’s still unconscious. Every so often he kinda opens his eyes but for the most part he remains unresponsive. He’s had CT scans and EEG’S on his brain, and they’ve shown that he’s still getting tons of seizures. They’ve started him on meds to try to stop the seizures. His left hand side of his body is still dead. He might be having an MRI but the doctors said its a last resort because of all the tubes and wires and things that are on him. Today they said they think his brain is swollen, but again, they cant be sure. On Saturday his stomach swelled up and when they did an ultrasound it showed his bowel was all twisted so he had to have a proceedure to fix that and thank goodness that worked. They were feeding him through a drip but they’ve stopped doing that for a few days to see if that will help. He’s off the ventolator for the most part but sometimes they give him oxygen or put him on ventolation for a few minutes to help him along. He’s on antibiotics for a chest infection from aspirating vomit and the antibiotics are clearing up his infection. So those are the updates that I have for now. I think its going to be a very long road for everyone whose involed in his care and also for him too.

Dads brother is ill, please pray for him if you pray, and thanks guys

So yesterday our dads brother was taken ill. He was found at around noon by a carer in the complex where he lives. He’s 64. He was found in his bedroom covered in blood and vomit and convulsing and an ambulance was called. When the ambulance got there they had to resussitate him and then they took him to the hospital. He has not regained consciousness since they resussitated him. They are treating the seizures as alcohol withdrawal seizures, but now they think he may have had a stroke also as the left hand side of his body is completely dead. Every time the doctors were trying to get a response from him today they couldnt. He has had CT scans and brain scans and all sorts of tests today. He’d been breathing on his own last night and earlier today but now he’s on a ventolator and in a medically induced coma. They’re also giving him medication to treat the seizures. They’ve said they think he’s having tons of seizures going on in his brain. . the doctor said its serious, he’ll either regain consciousness or he wont. If he does we dont know what type of damage will be done to his brain as we dont know how long he was there before he was found. Its a tough time for our family. Our dad whose his brother is really agitated and angry and not coping at all well. We’re trying to support him as best as we can. If any of you pray please do that for us. Thanks.
